Coverage C: Uninsured Motorists
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage pays for damage to you and/or your property caused by a driver who doesn't have adequate insurance limits to pay you or does not have any insurance coverage whatsoever. Uninsured motorist coverage is usually optional, but you really need it because the standard medical coverages won't come close to protecting you in the event of an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver.
Uninsured motorist protection, intended to pay your losses for bodily injury, is fault-based. If you cause an accident and the other vehicle is uninsured, you won't receive benefits from this coverage. Uninsured motorist protection pays only what you'd be entitled to if the other driver had purchased insurance and had caused the accident.
Underinsured motorist coverage takes care of your medical expenses not covered by the other driver's insurance up to the maximum for your own policy. For example, if you are in an accident with a driver who is at fault and underinsured, your insurance will pay the difference of your costs up to your insurance amount.
